Happy New Year!!!

Here we are sharing another year together. Growing creatively and being inspired by all the wonderful things this Universe has to offer. I can’t believe that the first month is almost over…. I know that 2012 will be a powerfully inspired creative year filled with abundance and treasures. A year to plant new seeds in my garden of life… New Personal Bloom, Blossoms and Buds to admire and enjoy.

February is said to be the month for Lovers, Love and the month of purification. Juno Februtis is an aspect of that great Roman Goddess as a purifier and fertility Goddess, who was especially connected with the month of February. February was the month of purification to the Romans because in their early calendar it was the last month of the year, and so considered an appropriate time to get rid of the bad, stale, or unclean in preparation for the New Year. February takes its name from the Latin februa, meaning "religious purification", and so means "the month of purification", or "the cleansing month".

Here at Art By Mia We keep the traditions going thru January! A New Year's Puerto Rican style gathering is simmering at La Casa de Mia…. Shoe box making for Dia de Reyes and so much more!!!

We would like to invite you to join us in our traditional holiday festivities while wishing you and your loved ones a very merry, safe, healthy and prosperous holiday season. May it be filled with love, inspiration and creativity always!… Now what are you waiting for? Vamos!!!!!

A traditional Año Viejo, New Year's Eve, celebration is spent with lots of family and friends. But before the party begins we spend the day cleaning the house, yard, closets, and cars….Why? It is believed that whatever the condition in which the New Year finds us, that is how we will stay for the rest of the year. So we say…Out with the old and in with the new. Lo viejo pa' fuera, lo nuevo pa' encima! WEPA!

What’s on the menu for New Years eve? Aside from the delicious traditional drink of Coquito we have arroz con gandules, penirl, ensalada, flan y mucho mas… Don’t forget to pass out baggies with 12 grapes that people need to start eating when there are 12 seconds to the New Year. Eat them by Midnight and have good luck all year long. Now grab an instrument and shake your way to a new year!!!

What better way to start a new year than with the preparation of a traditional love filled holiday of giving and being thankful!

Víspera de Reyes is the eve of El Día de Reyes (January 5th). The children get ready to receive gifts from the three Wise Men by collecting freshly cut grass to put in a shoe box for the Wise Men's camels to eat. Get a shoe box, crayons, paint, glue, paper, stickers and start decorating your box… don’t forget the glitter… THE KINGS LOVE GLITTER!!!! We would love to see your decorated boxes so send pics to artbymamamia@yahoo.com and we will post them on the site!!!

Día de Reyes is on January 6th. This is much like Christmas on the mainland. Children wake up early to see what Baltazar, Melchor, and Gaspar left them. Family and friends gather to celebrate this wonderful tradition filled with music, food, family and laughter! With so many parades and free events happening in and around town you are sure to be able to catch one.

El Museo del Barrio is hosting the 35^th Anniversary time-honored Three Kings Parade procession through the streets of El Barrio. Spirit and joy abound as they parade with camels, music, colorful puppets, dancing, and parrandas on this magical day. The parade route begins at 106th St. and Madison Ave. and ends at 115th St and Park Ave. From 10-1230P FREE ADMISSION.

Teatro SEA's Annual Three Kings Celebration/El Día de los Reyes Magos (Teatro SEA). January 6^th from 3-5P FREE ADMISSION The Three Wise Kings are coming to SEA! Join us in this wonderful annual celebration where every child will have an opportunity to be photographed and receive a free gift from the Three Kings! A wonderful day of family, joy, tradition and celebration.

A Puerto Rican Christmas with Mia

As the holidays quickly approach, I want to THANK YOU. I appreciate and am grateful to have you with me. Art By Mia could not have done it without the support and love of all the wonderful family, friends and Art supporters. I send a huge heartfelt hug and thank you to all across this universe and send prayers of GOOD HEALTH, PROSPERITY, LOVE and HAPPINESS to ALL. Did you know:

Nochebuena, (literally "Good Night"), is a Spanish word referring to the night of Christmas Eve.

Puerto Rican Christmas Traditions … QUE RIIIICCOOOO!!!!

Aguinaldos is what Puerto Ricans call their Christmas songs. Some of the songs are very religious and these are called villancicos. Some have a criollo flavor and they are called décimas navideñas. The rest are either traditional aguinaldos or popular Christmas songs.

Misa de Gallo is a Misa de Aguinaldo held at midnight on Christmas Eve. It is a very solemn but festive mass often including carolers, children dressed as angels and nativity characters, and lots of candles. Many families attend this festive and beautiful mass as a tradition.

Nochebuena is Christmas Eve (December 24th). In Puerto Rico, as well as other Latin American countries, the big holiday celebration is held on Nochebuena. Family and friends get together for a festivities and traditional foods of lechón asado and pasteles. The parties often last till morning. On Christmas Day people rest from Nochebuena.

Navidad is Christmas Day (December 25th). Most modern Puerto Rican families celebrate with Santa on this day. Homes are decorated much like in the mainland but include a lot of palm trees and their branches. Families set up "nacimientos" or "pesebres". The Three Wise Men or Los Reyes are prominent in the pesebres.

Parrandas is Christmas caroling Puerto Rican style, wepa!. Friends gather late in the evening to go from one house to the next singing traditional songs. The parranderos must surprise the unsuspecting friends and wake them with their music. The home owner has already given plenty of "hints" that he is prepared to receive a parranda. The parranderos gather outside the front door and at a signal the musicians play and the rest sing. At each house they stop for a while and party, then they go to the next house. At each stop the owners of the house join the parranda and it grows in numbers during the evening.

Traditional Holiday Foods - The main dish is usually roast pork (penirl) served along with arroz con gandules, plátanos, and pasteles. Pasteles are made using mashed green bananas the dough is filled with meat and is wrapped in the leaves of the banana tree. Holiday desserts include "arroz con dulce", "flan" and "tembleque" a custard. Coquito is the traditional holiday beverage and is made using coconut milk and rum, yes I said RUM!. A roast pig on a spit, called "lechón asao," is a tradition and takes all day to cook… Do you fight over the crispy skin?

The holidays do not end on December 25^th……. We keep the traditions going thru January! Having fun yet?
